Ripe on the farm this week:
Salad Greens
Collards/Kale
Beans
Summer Squash
Peppers
Celery
Tomatoes
Eggplant
Kohlrabi
Basil
The warmer weather last week gave us another nice burst of ripe tomatoes, but expect production of tomatoes and other summer crops to decrease quickly as the weather gets cooler and wetter. We are keeping a close watch on nighttime low temperatures in case of frost. Before the frost hits, we will pick all of the last summer crops – including green tomatoes, so keep an eye out for a fried green tomato recipe over the next weeks (we hope it won’t be for a while!). September 30th is our first date when frost becomes more likely here in the Erie area. As the summer veggies recede, look for broccoli, carrots, turnips, and other root vegetables to pick up! Kohlrabi and celery make an appearance this week. Kohlrabi can be sliced thin and sautéed or boiled and mashed along with potatoes. Don’t forget to eat the leaves as you would other greens!
